I wasnât sure what to do. What I wanted to do was call up a rideshare and hightail it back to my car so I could go home. I wanted to issue Cory a partial refund and block his number from my phone and his lusty image from my brain. What I wanted and what was actually going to happen were at opposite ends of the spectrum of reality. Sitting on the suede couch in Coryâs grandmotherâs living room next to the man in question as he listened to MJ tell him a rather involved story of the iguana from his second-grade classroom drove home something Iâd seen floating around message boards when I first became a freelancer.
All money wasnât good money.
Jumping at the chance to make an easy few hundred dollars had put me in a dangerous situation that I couldnât see myself out of. Not dangerous in a physical way, though. Cory was emotionally dangerous for a woman like me. Heâd admitted out of his own mouth that he avoided relationships, yet with every soft touch, every deep chuckle, every brush of his bourbon-brown gaze against my skin, I caught myself wondering what if. What if I gave in to the attraction that we both felt? What if I bent my rules just to see what his lips tasted like? What if he might be interested in seeing me beyond today?
Every single one of those âwhat ifsâ was dangerous. And I was foolish.
How could I consider giving time to a man who felt the need to hire a fake girlfriend? While I was telling Cory to analyze his issues, I needed to have my own head examined. I was sitting in a room full of strangers, having a mental argument about whether or not I should give a man a chance to disappoint me. As soon as I got home I was going to search for my clown shoes and put those joints on. As I sat there berating myself, Coryâs grandmother, tapped me on the arm.
âCome on, Kailyn, baby. Help me in the kitchen.â
Ms. Elva was a sweet woman; tall like her son and grandchildren, and very spirited for her age. On the drive over, Cory told me she was in her late 70s, but from the moment I met her, she was buzzing around her house with more energy than her son. Dutifully, I followed her into the kitchen.
On the counter were two large sheet pans covered in what looked like four-dozen sugar cookies in various shapes. Peering at the pans, I noticed Christmas trees, wreaths, stockings, and what was probably supposed to be a Santa hat. Ms. Elva placed one of each shape on a plate and handed it to me, then pointed at a glass bowl which held three plastic bags filled with different colored frosting.
âGrab those and help me decorate a few of these cookies.â
Hesitantly, I picked up one of the bags, which was clipped just above the piping tip on the end.
âUm. Iâm not sure that Iâm the right person for this job, Ms.
